Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.--This time, the Smith College soccer team was on the right end of a one goal game, as
Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) came off the bench to net the only goal in a 1-0 win over Wellelsey College on Saturday afternoon. Smith improves to 2-9, with a 1-5 record in the NEWMAC, while Wellesley drops to 3-9-3, and 2-4 in NEWMAC play.
The win snapped a nine game losing streak for Smith, of which seven had come by one goal. This time, the Pioneers got the only goal they would need five minutes before halftime. Theurer latched on to
K.K. Lane (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep)'s through ball, and hammered a shot to the left side that beat Wellesley starter Clair Cerda for her fifth goal of the season.
With the Pioneers clinging to a 1-0 lead in the second half,
Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) withstood a barrage of Wellesley shots, as the Blue fired off 11 attempts in a 13-minute span. The senior made four of her six total saves during that stretch, to earn her second shutout of the season.
Smith will travel to the U.S Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, October 18, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Wellesley will host MIT on the same day at 4 p.m.
