Volleyball Felled By Little East Opposition

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team fell in a pair of matches against two of the top teams from the Little East Conference on Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers fell to Plymouth State University 3-1 (25-22, 18-25 19-25, 21-25) in the opener, and to Keene State College 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 17-25) in the afternoon contest.

Smith dropped its sixth consecutive match and fell to 7-13 on the season.  Keene State, who beat Mount Holyoke College in their opening game today, improves to 12-10, and Plymouth State, who also beat Mount Holyoke, upped their record to 17-8.

Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led Smith with 20 kills  and 14 digs against Plymouth State, hitting .241 with two service aces.  Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) added 12 kills and 22 digs.  Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) and Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) had 23 and 16 assists, respectively.

Against Keene State, the Pioneers were led by Bell, who hit .231 with only one error in 26 attacks, and Drummond, who had 13 kills, seven digs, and a solo block.  Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 17 digs, while Bezubka and Faria each had 14 assists.

Smith returns to NEWMAC action with a trip to Mount Holyoke College on October 18 at 7 p.m.  Keene State will host Emerson College in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. on October 20, and Plymouth State will host Middlebury College on October 19 at 6 p.m.
