Game Preview: Volleyball vs. Mount Holyoke

October 18, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--For the second time in 10 days, the Smith College volleyball team (7-13, 1-5 NEWMAC) will take on Mount Holyoke College (7-12, 1-5 NEWMAC).  The two teams face off for a match crucial to gaining a NEWMAC tournament berth.

Last Meeting: The Pioneers swept Mount Holyoke in the opening match for both teams at the Seven Sisters Championship back on October 8.  Smith jumped out to an early 12-5 lead in the first set, and never looked back, winning 25-16, 25-20, 25-18.

Smith Overview: Smith has dropped six straight matches since the above-mentioned win over Mount Holyoke.  Most recently, Smith dropped a pair of matches at the Little East/NEWMAC Challenge to Plymouth State University and Keene State College.  A win tonight would put Smith right in the thick of the NEWMAC playoff race - in four of the last five years, a league record of 4-5 has been enough to place in the top six.

Mount Holyoke Overview: The Lyons have lost eight consecutive matches, including seven in a row by 3-0 sweeps. Mount Holyoke will be looking to defeat Smith for the first time since 2001.

Smith Player to Watch: Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) is averaging 15.2 assists per match over her last five matches.

Mount Holyoke Player to Watch: Sophomore Martina Kneifel leads the team with 166 kills and 31 service aces.

Did you know? In their past six matches, Smith and Mount Holyoke have played five of the same opponents?  Both teams have played Wellesley, Vassar, Bryn Mawr, Keene State, and Plymouth State.
