October 22, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team closed out their home schedule with a 5-0 loss the Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday afternoon.  Smith falls to 2-11 overall, with a 1-7 NEWMAC record, while Wheaton improves to 12-2-3, with a 6-1-1 NEWMAC ledger.

The Lyons needed 91 seconds to get on the scoreboard.  A foul just on the edge of the penalty area gave Wheaton a free-kick, and Joy-Marie Fernandes curled the ball past a diving Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) for a 1-0 lead.

Tara Caney made it 2-0 when she controlled the ball following a defensive miscue and beat Gregor with an unassisted goal at the 18:48 mark, and Lauren Corigliano increased the lead to 3-0 when she headed home a corner kick from Kaitlyn Mawicke with 24:51 on the clock.

Corigliano set up Samantha Bennett for the fourth goal of the game, and the Lyons carried a 4-0 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers' best chance to get on the scoreboard came with 10 minutes played in the first half, but Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall)'s shot was wrapped up by Lindsey Leddy.

Wheaton completed the scoring with 1:25 left in the game when Shelby Benoit headed home Myra Parsonnet's cross.

The loss eliminates Smith from postseason contention. Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) made eight saves, while Leddy played the first 75 minutes and made four saves.  Kelsie Jequine played the final 15 minutes in net for Wheaton.

Before the game, Smith honored their seven seniors, playing their final home game.  In addition to Gregor and Theurer, Jenn Chang (Seoul, South Korea/Wilbraham & Monson), Cara Gubbins (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth), Ethan Shapiro (Newton, Mass./Newton North), Emma Coffin (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Mt. Abram), and Perri Hom (Westwood, N.J./Dwight-Englewood) were honored.

Smith will next be in action on Tuesday, October 25, when they travel to Fitchburg State University at 7 p.m.  Wheaton will play at Keene State on the same day.
