Box Score KEENE, N.H.--Playing in rare snowy conditions, the Smith College field hockey team fell 5-1 on the road to Keene State College on Thursday night.  Smith falls to 4-12, while Keene State improves to 15-4 in the final non-conference game of the season for both teams.
Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) made 23 saves in the cage for Smith, one short of her career high, set earlier this year against Mount Holyoke.  Lawson now has 211 saves on the season, good for fifth place all-time in the Smith record books.  20 saves in the season finale will see her set the new single season record.
The Owls scored four times in the opening 10 minutes to jump out to an early lead.  Katlyn Simula opened the scoring just 78 seconds into the contest, and Elizabeth Coffin and Jacki Benson scored 1:15 apart for a 3-0 lead with 6:31 played.  Julia Forgione added the fourth at the 9:21 mark.
Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) got Smith on the board when she converted an
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) feed for her fifth goal of the season.  The senior has now scored in four of her last five games.  Hopkins is now all alone in fourth place on Smith's all-time goals list with her 31st career tally.  Along with her 31 career goals, she has 11 assists, which is tied for fifth all-time at Smith, and her 73 points are also fifth all-time.
Alyce Ference restored Keene State's four goal advantage with a goal 11 minutes into the second half.
Smith will close out the season with a home NEWMAC contest against Worcester Polytechnic Institute on October 29 at 4:30 p.m.  Keene State will finish their regular season with a 10:30 a.m. tilt against Framingham State University.
