Volleyball Falls To WPI In Season Finale

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) etched her name in the Smith College record books, but it was not enough to prevent the Pioneers from falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 15-25) in their final regular season game on Saturday.

Smith concludes their season with a record of 9-18, and 1-8 in NEWMAC play.  WPI captured the fifth seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament and improved to 19-9, and 5-4 in NEWMAC competition.

Drummond finished with 13 kills, giving her 372 for the season.  That is the third best single season mark in school history, behind Kate Sorensen, who holds the top two places with 428 in 2004 and 425 in 2005.

Kerrin Beovich added seven kills, four service aces and three digs. Bailey Sarber tallied six kills and five digs. Alex Rangel and Kim Woodward set up the offense with 18 and 13 set assists, respectively. Joan Porambo  spearheaded the defense with 12 digs.
 
The decisive part of the match came in the second set when WPI used a 10-2 run to transfer a 16-11 Smith advantage into a 21-18 Crimson and Gray bulge.  Rangle served five points during the spurt, including three aces.
 
Drummond also had a four block assists and three digs. Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) racked up eight kills and eight digs. Smith kept the first two games close with some excellent blocking at the net, putting down nine total blocks, including 16 block assists. Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) had five block assists while Becca Gordon (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) joined Drummond with four.  Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) and Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) both doled out 10 assists.
