NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team snapped a four game losing streak with a 7-2 triumph over Springfield College on Tuesday night. The Pioneers swept all three doubles matches and won four singles matches to improve to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC. The Pride drop to 2-5 and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Smith won three doubles matches to open up an early lead.
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) and
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) knocked off Sam Carney and Jen Cleary by an 8-6 score at No. 1, and
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Rachel Canfora (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) beat Vanessa Senecal and Sydney Striemer 9-7 at No. 2.
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) made it a clean sweep of doubles play with an 8-1 win over Sarah Morgan and Amy Buttarazzi at No. 3.
Springfield got back in the match with wins at the first two singles positions. Carney earned at 6-1, 6-1 win over Dubin at No. 1, and Cleary came back to beat Oblamski 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
Weick earned her second win of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Erin Woodbury at No. 3 singles, and that was just the beginning, as Smith won the next three matches to capture the win. Inskeep toppled Senecal 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to clinch the match, and the icing on the cake was Zhao posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Buttarazzi at No. 5 and Canfora earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6.
The match was the last home contest for Smith in the fall season. The Pioneers will get hit the road to play Wellesley on Saturday, October 8, at 1 p.m. Springfield will host Rhode Island College on Thursday, October 6.
