Game Preview: Volleyball vs. Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (6-6, 1-3 NEWMAC) looks to go above .500 for the first time since September 23 when they host No. 21 Springfield College (16-0, 4-0 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night.  The action kicks off at 7 p.m. in Ainsworth Gym.

Last Meeting: The Pride swept a 3-0 win on October 5, 2010 by scores of 25-15, 26-24, 25-13.  Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had eight kills and four block assists. 

Last Smith Win: Smith beat the Pride in four sets at the MIT Invitational on September 24, 2005.  Kate Sorensen had 14 kills and 26 digs for the Pioneers, who improved to 9-2.

Smith Overview: Playing at home for the first time since September 17, Smith got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win over Mills College (Calif.) last Friday night.  Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School) had eight kills and hit .533 for the match, while Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 12 kills and 18 digs.

Springfield Overview:  The Pride are ranked No. 21 in the country, having won their first 16 consecutive matches under the guidance of new coach Moira Long.  Springfield has won convincingly as well - 10 of their 16 wins have been 3-0 sweeps.

Smith Player to Watch: A captain and one of Smith's most consistent players, Bell has totalled at least eight kills in a match on five separate occasions. 

Springfield Player to Watch: Lauren Torvi - an extremely efficient player, Torvi averages nearly four kills per game, and hits .388.  Her hitting percentage ranks in the top 15 nationwide.

Did you know? While Springfield College is the "Birthplace of Basketball" - not too far up the road, in Holyoke, the game of volleyball was invented.  The original name? Mintonette.
