Tennis Swept By Wellesley

October 08, 2011

WELLESLEY, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team was eliminated from postseason contention with a 9-0 loss at Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon.  The Blue improved to 7-1 and 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Smith dropped to 1-5, and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.

The Pioneers needed to win this and their next matchup against Clark, to get into the NEWMAC postseason tournament - even if the Pioneers were to defeat Clark on October 11, they would have the same record as Mount Holyoke, but the Lyons hold the tiebreaker between the two teams thanks to their win on September 27.

The No. 1 doubles team of Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) and Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fell to Diana Granger and Emily Bary 8-6, while Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) lost 8-1 to Melissa Clark and Joyce Chen at No. 2.  Erica Choo and Kendall Tada made it a doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Rachel Canfora (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and Julia Signell (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) at No. 3.

Oblamski lost at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2 to Marie Watanabe, while Choo defeated Weick 6-1, 7-5.  Inskeep was defeated by Clark 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, and Canfora lost to Granger 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

Tada knocked off Zhao 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5, and Morgan Johnstonbaugh beat Grace McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass./La Salle Academy) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 to finish the match.

Smith will play Clark University on October 11 at 5 p.m. in Worcester.
