NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (6-7) will take part in the biennial Seven Sisters Championship this weekend, taking on NEWMAC foes Mount Holyoke (7-5) and Wellesley (10-6), along with long time Seven Sisters Members Vassar (11-8) and Bryn Mawr (7-9).
Last Meeting (Mount Holyoke): Smith snapped a 15 game losing streak with a 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-7) win on September 19, 2010.
Last Meeting (Vassar): Smith dropped a 3-0 match to Vassar by scores of 11-25, 13-25, 23-25 at the MIT Invitational on September 24, 2010.
Last Smith Win (Vassar): In a back-and-forth match, Smith captured a five set decision by scores of 27-30, 30-23, 24-30, 30-22, 15-13 on October 8, 2005.
Last Meeting (Bryn Mawr): Bryn Mawr took a 3-1 decision (23-25, 19-25, 26-24, 22-25) at the 2009 edition of the Seven Sisters Championship.
Last Smith Win (Bryn Mawr): Smith won 3-0 (30-16, 33-31, 31-29) at the Seven Sisters Championship on October 7, 2007, at Vassar College.
Last Meeting (Wellesley): The Pioneers and Blue have already met twice this season - the Blue have won both, most recently a 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 8-25) win at the MIT Invitational.
Last Smith Win (Wellesley): September 17, 2005. Smith took a three set game from the Blue, winning 30-27, 30-28, 30-16, to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers found it tough going against No. 20 Springfield College on October 4. The undefeated Pride took a three set decision, despite a team high six kills from
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth).
Mount Holyoke Overview: The Lyons have won four of their last six matches, including a tri-match sweep of Mills College and Bay Path College on October 1. This will be the first of at least two matchups between Smith and Mount Holyoke this year - the Lyons and Pioneers are scheduled to meet in NEWMAC play on October 18.
Vassar Overview: The Brewers have hit a bit of a rough patch, losing three of their last five, with all three losses coming in five sets. Members of the Liberty League, Vassar swept Stevens Tech (N.J.) in a non-conference matchup on October 5 in their most recent outing.
Bryn Mawr Overview: From the Centennial Conference, Bryn Mawr has followed up a four game winning streak by dropping two of three to conference foes Franklin & Marshall at Muhlenberg. The Owls have bounced back from a rough start to the year, which saw them lose seven of their first nine matches.
Wellesley Overview: The Blue dropped a 3-1 decision to Tufts in a non-conference game on October 5, which snapped a four match winning streak that included wins over two teams they will face at this tournament, Smith and Mount Holyoke.
Smith Player to Watch: Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) is dangerous at the net (17 total blocks), but is deadly at the back too, with 15 service aces.
Mount Holyoke Player to Watch: Martina Kneifel leads the team in kills (116, hit percentage (.177), and service aces (25).
Vassar Player to Watch: Chloe McGuire backstops the defense with 2.91 digs per set, 13 solo blocks, and 15 block assists.
Bryn Mawr Player to Watch: Danielle Preziuso sets up the offense with 299 assists, or 5.07 per contest.
Wellesley Player to Watch: Amanda Duritsch is the team leader in hitting percentage (.288) and total blocks (23).
