April 19, 2011

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team fell in their final road game of the season with an 18-2 defeat to Springfield College on a rainy Tuesday night.

The Pride improve to 9-4, including a perfect 5-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. The Pioneers drop to 3-11, 0-6.

Meagan Dobson set a new single season mark for assists as her five helpers tonight gives her 35 on the year. Dobson surpassed the former record of 31 assists that Lindsay Reiniger established during the 2002 season.

Fitting enough, leading the Pride offense was Dobson, who finished with six points off five assists and a goal, while Jackie Moscardelli added four goals and an assists. Nicole Soucie and Allie Davis each netted hat tricks, and Rebecca DiSisto totaled a goal and two assists. Brittany LeGuelaff won five draw controls and Anne Versprille needed to make just one save in the win.

Springfield held a 31-4 advantage in shots, including a 23-2 edge in the opening half. Meredith Kallfelz took the loss in goal for Smith as she gave up five goals in the opening 9:10 of the contest. Alina Pechacek (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy) played in the final 50-plus minutes and made seven saves while allowing 13 goals.

The Pioneers jumped on the board first just 26 seconds into the contest when Liz Mauro (Manalapan, N.J./Rutgers Prep) converted an inside feed from Adrienne Horne (Appleton, Maine/Camden Hills). Springfield answered back with 14 unanswered to end the half as it took a commanding 14-1 lead after the first 30 minutes of play.

The Pride poured in the first three goals of the second half to open up a 14-goal cushion on a Meagan O'Brien tally with 16:50 to play. Sofia Nakhnikian-Weintraub (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene) finally scored the Pioneers first goal in over 45 minutes with an unassisted marker at the 13:16 mark, before DiSisto closed out the scoring with an unassisted strike with 3:45 on the clock.

Smith will close out the season with a home tilt against UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday, April 21, at 5 p.m.
