NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team closed out the 2011 season with a 9-0 defeat to Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
Smith came closest to a win at No. 3 doubles, where the tandem of
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and
Julia Signell (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) fell to Linda McDougal and Nicki Softness 8-6. In other doubles play,
Maggie Steiner (Madison, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy) and
Allyson Hawkins (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon) lost to Genevieve Aniello and Grace Smith 8-4 at No. 1, and Kiley Robbins and Sarah Miller defeated
Meghan Smith (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and
Nawal Mays (Niskayuna, N.Y./Emma Willard) 8-1.
In singles play, Smith got fine performances from
Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central ), who moved up to No. 5 in defeat to Softness 6-1, 6-3, and
Grace McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass./La Salle Academy), playing at No. 6 and falling to Hannah Berkman 6-0, 6-3.
Steiner and Hawkins, playing in their final collegiate matches, fell at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Steiner was beaten by Grace Smith 6-2, 6-1, and Hawkins to Kiley Robbins 6-1, 6-4.
Meghan Smith (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) lost to McDougal 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Zhao lost to Kaitlyn Clark 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.
In addition to Steiner and Hawkins, Mays was also playing her final match at home.
Smith concludes its season with a record of 6-16. Wesleyan improves to 11-5.
