NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team hosts Curry College and Elms College in a tri-match at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. today. This is the home opener for the Pioneers. Here's how Smith matches up with the Colonels and the Blazers.
Last Meeting (Curry): This is the first ever matchup between Curry and Smith.
Last Meeting (Elms): September 11, 2010. Smith swept a three set match from the Blazers for their first win of the season by a 3-0 (29-27, 25-12, 25-15) count.
Smith Overview: Smith will play at home for the first time this season, after winning their first game under
Fran Vandermeer on Tuesday night. The Pioneers dropped the first set to Western New England Unversity, then swept the next three sets to beat the Golden Bears for the first time since 2000.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) totaled 21 kills and 10 digs for Smith.
Curry Overview: Curry has also won their only match of the season, beating Mass. Maritime in their opener 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16).
Elms Overview: The Blazers hit the road for the first time this season after posting a 2-1 record at their own Blazer Invitational. After dropping the opening match of the invitational to Husson, the Blazers won their final two matches, beating Mass. Maritime 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-5) and SUNY-Cobleskill 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21).
Smith Player To Watch: Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown). A sophomore setter, Bezubka ran Smith's offense efficiently, with 22 assists.
Curry Player To Watch: Courtney DiBiasio. A freshman outside hitter, DiBiasio had eight kills, a team high in the win over Mass. Maritime.
Elms Player To Watch: Christina Martin. A junior outside hitter, Martin is averaging 2.56 kills and has totaled 34 digs in the first three matches of the season.
