Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-The Smith College volleyball team continued their hot start to the season, sweeping a trimatch from Curry College and Elms College on Saturday afternoon. Smith improves to 3-0 with the win, equaling their total from all of 2010.
In the opener, Smith made quick work of the Colonels, sweeping them 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-10).
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led the way with nine kills, three service aces, and a pair of solo blocks, and
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) was equally dominant at the net, with six kills and three solo blocks.
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) had another fine game quarterbacking the team, with thirteen assists and two service aces, and
Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) also had 11 assists.
The Pioneers were equally quick against the Blazers, dispatching Elms 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-8). Drummomd was again the catalyst with 10 kills, while Sarlandt had three kills, two solo blocks, and three block assists. Bezubka had 14 assists to go with three service aces, three digs, and a solo block, and
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) compiled 13 digs and a service ace.
Smith will take their unbeaten record into the beginning of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, September 13, when they play host to Wellesley College in a 7 p.m. contest.
