Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Meghan Goodrow delivered what stood as the game winning goal in the 61^st minute of play to help lift the Blazers to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Smith College in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.
 
With the win, Elms snaps a 23-game losing streak dating back to Oct. 10, 2009, and earns its first victory over the Pioneers since a 1-0 win in 2000.
 
Elms improves to 1-2 on the season, while Smith moves to 1-3 overall. Tuesday's win also marks head coach Kim Cosenza's first victory at the Blazers' helm.
 
After playing 60 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Goodrow pushed Elms ahead with her first collegiate goal controlling a loose ball in front of the net.
 
Smith had four chances in the final nine minutes of play to net the equalizer but could not capitalize on three penalty corner opportunities as Elms' junior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita made three crucial saves and finished with 12 in the contest. Bonavita is now 1-2 between the pipes this season.
 
Despite being outshot 22-9 in the contest, Elms registered seven shots in the final 35 minutes of play highlighted by Goodrow's blast in the 61^st minute. Freshman forward Tatiana Frizzell sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey and Goodrow each finished with two shots in the wining effort.
 
Smith was led by Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough)'s five-shot effort, while Sara Mercier (Portland, Maine/McAuley) totaled four shots in the loss.
 
Pioneers' goalkeeper Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) turned away four shots in the losing effort and falls to 0-3 on the season.
 
Elms returns to non-conference action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when it travels to Colby-Sawyer College for a 2:00 p.m. contest.  Smith will begin NEWMAC play with a trip to Mount Holyoke College.
