September 17, 2011

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team takes on Wheaton College (Mass.), as they continue New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play.  Here's how the Lyons and Pioneers break down.

Last Meeting: September 25, 2010.  Wheaton 9, Smith 0.  The Lyons did not drop a set en route to sending Smith to 0-2.

Last Smith Win: October 3, 2009.  Smith 6, Wheaton 3.  The Pioneers handed the Lyons what would be their only loss in NEWMAC play that fall, winning two doubles matches and four singles matches.  Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.), then a sophomore won at No. 2 singles, as did Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East), who triumphed in three sets at No. 4.

Wheaton Overview:
The Lyons have won the last two NEWMAC regular season and tournament titles, and last season they advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they fell to eventual national champion Williams College.

Smith Overview: Smith lost in their only match of the season thus far, falling to MIT last weekend.

Wheaton Player To Watch: Lyndsay Cooke.  Playing all her matches at No. 1, Cooke has only lost one set at singles and one at doubles all year long.

Smith Player to Watch: Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty).  Zhao was the only player who did not get swept for Smith against MIT, going to a third set at No. 6 singles.
