NORTON, Mass. -- The Smith College tennis team fell to defending champion Wheaton College 8-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon. It was the second consecutive loss for Smith.
Senior Allesandra DiOrio and sophomores Morgan Bell, Sarah Crom, and Lyndsay Cooke, each won their singles matches as the Lyons improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in NEWMAC play. The Pioneers fell to 0-2 (0-2 NEWMAC) with the loss.
Cooke posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over freshman
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) while freshman Alex Marlowe notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over senior
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East).
At No, 3 singles, DiOrio knocked off first year
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Bell upended senior
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Crom posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over junior
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and junior Jesse Boggis tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against sophomore
Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central ) .
In doubles action, Cooke and Marlowe won 8-4 at No. 1 against Dubin and Inskeep while DiOrio and Crom defeated Oblamski and Weick, 8-4, at No. 2. The Pioneers earned their only point of the afternoon at No. 3 singles, where Zhao and sophomore
Julia Signell (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) knocked off Bell and junior Julie Parmakian, 8-4.
The Lyons return to action next Saturday when they travel to Springfield for a 1 p.m. match with the Pride. The Pioneers host Babson next Saturday at 1 p.m.
