Game Preview: Volleyball vs. Babson

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team continues New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday with a visit from Babson College.  Keep reading to break down the Beavers and Pioneers.

Last Meeting: September 18, 2010.  The Beavers took a 3-0 win from Smith in Babson Park, winning 25-20, 25-11, 25-13.  It was a tough night for Smith, who only hit .064 as a team on the evening.

Last Smith win: October 2, 2007.  Smith beat Babson on the road by a 3-0 count, winning the sets 30-28, 32-30, and 30-22.  Catharine Shafer totaled 14 kills, four service aces, and 11 digs as Smith improved to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

Babson Overview:
Babson snapped a three game losing streak with a sweep of Emerson in non-conference play on Thursday night.  Meg Flaherty and Cathy Tinker combined for 26 kills as the Beavers improved to 5-5.

Smith Overview:
After a 3-0 start, Smith dropped their first game of the season to Wellesley on Tuesday night.  After winning the first set 26-24, Smith dropped the next three to the Blue, 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.

Babson Player to Watch: Meg Flaherty.  A senior, Flaherty has almost twice as many kills (126) as errors (63), and averages 3.60 kills per game.

Smith Player to Watch:  Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne).  A sophomore libero, Ashworth ranks fourth in the league in digs, averaging 4.5 per game.

Did you know?  Babson coach Eric Neely is one of six new volleyball coaches in the NEWMAC - the others are Fran Vandermeer (Smith), Eric Snyder (Coast Guard), Craig LeTourneau (Wheaton), Cathy Markowski (WPI), and Moira Long (Springfield).
