Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth)'s outstanding game was overshadowed as the Smith College volleyball team fell to visiting Babson College 3-1 (14-25, 25-15, 19-25, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference(NEWMAC) play.
The result was the second straight loss for Smith - the Pioneers fell to 3-2 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC. The Beavers won their second consecutive match after a three game losing streak, going over .500 at 6-5 and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Drummond totalled 19 kills and hit .444 for the game - the 19 kills nearly matched her career high of 21, and the .444 was the third highest she had ever hit in a match. Her 19 kills represented 58% of Smith's total offense.
After ceding the first set to Babson 25-14, Smith evened out the match at one set apiece with a 25-15 win in the second set. Babson put the match away with wins of 25-19 in the third set and 25-22 in the third set. In addition to Drummond's 19 kills, she had three service aces, and six digs.
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) piled up 18 digs, and
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) had eight kills, seven digs, one solo block, and five block asssts.
Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) set up the offense with 19 assists, and
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) had 12 assists.
Smith will be on the road in NEWMAC play, heading to Wheaton on Tuesday, September 20 for a 7 p.m. matchup. Babson will be at WPI, also on Tuesday, September 20 at 7 p.m.
