Smith Drops Into Bronze Bracket at MIT Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEDFORD, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team lost both of its matches on the opening day of the MIT Invitational on Friday evening, dropping decisions to Endicott College and Tufts University.  The results move Smith into the Bronze Bracket of the competition.

The Pioneers opened the tournament against Endicott; after falling in the first set 20-25, the Pioneers rallied to win set No. 2 25-12, but lost the final two sets 25-22 and 25-10 to lose the match 3-1.  Against undefeated Tufts, the Pioneers fell in three sets, 13-25, 16-25, 9-25.

Rosa Drummonmd was outstanding again in the loss to Endicott, piling up 19 kills, nine digs, and three block assists.  Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly), Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School), and Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) each had eight kills in the front line - Bell also had three service aces and two block assists.  Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) had 23 assists, six digs, and a service ace, and Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 19 digs.

The Pioneers struggled against Tufts, combining for 17 kills as a team.  Bell led the way with five kills, and seven digs, while Bezubka had nine assists and Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) had six assists.

Smith (4-4) will be grouped with Wellesley College, Newbury College, and Regis College in the Bronze Bracket, for 9th-12th place.  The Pioneers will face Regis in one semifinal at 10 a.m., and the winner of the match will face the winner of Wellesley and Newbury at 2 p.m. for the ninth place.  The respective losers of each match will also play at 2 p.m.
