Tennis Swept By Babson

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team fell by a 9-0 count to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Babson College on Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped Smith to 0-3, and 0-3 in NEWMAC play, while Babson remained undefeated to open the year, improving to 7-0 and 3-0 in NEWMAC competition.

Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) fell at No. 1 singles to Alex Freeman by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) lost at No. 2 to Sarah Whitaker 6-1, 6-2.  Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) was defeated at No. 3 by Rebecca Stone by matching 6-2, 6-2 scores, and Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) lost to Mikaela Stamas 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. 

Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) was pushed to extra points in the second set, but fell at No. 5 6-3, 7-5, to Minte Tamoshumas, and Grace McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass./La Salle Academy) lost to Monica Merer at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0 to give all six singles matches to Babson.

The Beavers took all three doubles matches as well, as Freeman and Whitaker beat Inskeep and Oblamski 8-0 at No. 1.  Tamoshumas and Stone teamed up to beat Zhao and Weick 8-4 at No. 2, and Mercer teamed up with Ashley Lake to beat Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central ) and Julie SIgnell 8-2 at No. 3.

Smith will continue NEWMAC play this fall when they play host to Mount Holyoke on September 27 at 5:30 p.m., while Babson will go to MIT on the 27th at 4 p.m.
