Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team captured 10th place at the MIT Invitational on Saturday, sweeping a three set match (25-15, 25-18, 25-21) from Regis College before falling in the championship round of the Bronze Bracket to NEWMAC foe Wellesley in a 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 8-25) loss.
In the semifinal against Regis, the Pioneers were led by
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth), who had seven kills and 11 digs, complemented by nine kills and four service aces from
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale).
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) nearly had a double-double with eight kills and 10 digs, and
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) also had 11 digs on the back line.
Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) and
Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) had 14 and 11 assists, respectlively, for the Pioneers.
Against Wellesley, the Pioneers found it tough going. Drummond led the way with six kills, and Ashworth had eight digs.
The result was a two place improvement for Smith, who finished in 12th place at the 2010 edition of the MIT Invitational.
Springfield College defeated Connecticut College to win the Gold Bracket championship, while Williams College knocked off Frostburg State University to win the Silver Bracket.
Smith will resume NEWMAC play on Tuesday night when they make the trip to Coast Guard, the defending NEWMAC tournament champions.
