Smith Falls On The Road At Coast Guard

Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Smith College volleyball team lost on the road in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday night. Coast Guard won by game scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18.

The Bears, playing just their second home game of the season, after 11 straight on the road, improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Smith drops to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Sophomore Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led Smith with nine kills and 14 digs, freshman Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School) had eight kills and sophomore setter Hayley Bezubka (N. Kingstown, R.I./N. Kingstown) led the Pioneers with 13 assists.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first game and later used six straight points, five of them served by Mason, to take a 17-7 lead before winning 25-14.  In game two, The Bears again started strong scoring eight of nine points turning a 2-2 tie into a 10-3 advantage. Coast Guard scored the final four points to win the game 25-16 with junior Karen Matic serving the final three points.

The Bears closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the third game after jumping out to a fast 11-4 lead.

Junior Catherine Walker had seven kills and three blocks, sophomore Sam Marmolejo had a team-high 15 digs to go with three aces while junior setter Karen Matic had 22 assists in the win for Coast Guard.

Smith will host Mills College (Calif.) on Friday, September 30, at 7 p.m.  Coast Guard will participate in a tri-match with Gordon and Roger Williams on October 1.
