NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (1-5) looks to snap a five game losing streak when they host high flying Westfield State University (7-1-1) on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Owls are unbeaten in their last four.
Last Meeting: September 29, 2010. Westfield State scored in the second minute and never let up, shutting out the Pioneers 5-0.
Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) had another outstanding game, with 12 saves, to keep the game close.
Last Smith Win: September 15, 2001 - Smith ran riot, posting a 5-0 win over the Owls to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Smith Overview: Smith is proving themselves a much different team than a year ago, despite a record of 1-5. At this time last year, Smith's record was slightly better (1-5-1), but Smith was in the midst of a five game losing streak where they scored not a single goal and gave up 16. This year, Smith could easily be 5-1 - four of their five losses have come by a single goal, and in six games so far this year, Smith has given up only 10 goals.
Westfield State Overview: The Owls are on a roll, having won seven of their nine games this year, and three in a row. The most recent of these wins was an 8-0 drubbing of Mass. Maritime, where the Owls opened up a 4-0 lead in the first 27 minutes.
Smith Player to Watch: Kaitlin Johnson has started every game, and contributed a crucial assist against Babson last weekend, springing the offside trap to set up Smith's second goal.
Westfield State Player to Watch: Three different players have two game winning gaols apiece for Westfield State, but Leann RIvard leads the team with six goals and four assists.
Did you know? This is Smith's penultimate non-conference game of the season. Smith's next six games are all in the NEWMAC, and the second-to-last game of the year is the Pioneers' final non-conference game against Fitchburg State on October 25.
