Westfield State Shuts Down Smith, 4-0

September 28, 2011

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Westfield State Universty scored four goals in nine minutes to break up a scoreless game as the Owls knocked off Smith College, 4-0, in non-conference soccer action Wednesday afternoon.

Smith drops to 1-6, while Westfield State improves to 8-1-1.  The Pioneers put on early pressure, winning a pair of corner kicks, and Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga./Galloway) forced Westfield starting goalie Jess Habif into a pair of saves.  The first half featured plenty of chances, as the Owls outshot the Pioneers 10-7, but neither team could breach the goal.  Smith's best chance came in the 38th minute, as Meredith Peck (Plymouth, N.H./Holderness School) was sprung down the left side, but skewed her shot wide past Habif.

Scoreless at the break, the Owls made a change in goal as Nicky Stasz took over between the pipes, but the goals started to come at the other end Brittanie McGregor broke the deadlock when she slotted home a pass from Leann Rivard at the 53:16 mark.  The Owls made it 2-0 when Lauren McLaughlin scored off a Madison Farrell assist four minutes later.

McGregor set up Kayley Miller for a goal that made it 3-0 in the 61st minute, and the Owls finished the scoring two minutes after that with a tally from Kate Wye.

Gregor made 12 saves in net for Smith, which was a season high. Habif made six first half saves for Westfield State, while Stasz made three in the second half.

Smith will resume NEWMAC play this weekend with a trip to MIT on October 1 at 4 p.m.  Westfield State will host Fitchburg State on October 1 at noon.
