NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team kicks off their season with a visit to Western New England University at 7 p.m. Here's everything you need to know about the Golden Bears.
Last Meeting: September 8, 2010. Western New England beat Smith 3-2; after falling behind 2-0, Smith rallied to force a fifth set with a 31-29 win in the third set and a 25-19 win in set four before the Golden Bears stemmed the tide with a 15-11 win in set No. 5.
Last Smith Win: September 30, 2000. Back when all sets were only played to 15 points, Smith notched a 3-0 win at the Wesleyan Invitational, beating WNEC 15-5, 15-9, 15-7.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers return all but two players to a team that, while posting a record of 3-21 last year, is full of potential. Veteran head coach
Fran Vandermeer is in her first year with the program, and has a track record of success - she took Williams College to the NCAA tournament six times in 10 seasons, including four trips to the Elite 8.
Western New England Overview: The Golden Bears are under the direction of a new head coach as well. Bret Stothart takes over the program after two consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament as the head coach at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. Stothart takes over a team that went 10-20 a season ago, falling in the quarterfinals of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
Smith Player To Watch: Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth). The sophomore outside hitter was Smith's most consistent player in 2010, averaging 2.44 kills per game and racking up 25 service aces.
Western New England Player To Watch: Inna Sergeychik. The senior averaged just under two kills per game in 2010, playing in all 30 matches.
