Pioneers Fall To No. 21 Babson

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Kathleen King scored 22 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and passed out six assists as No. 21 Babson College beat Smith College 83-57 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference basketball action on Saturday afternoon. 

The Beavers won their 46th straight conference game, improving to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the league.  Smith fell to 10-4, with a 5-3 mark in league competition. 

Smith stayed with the Beavers, pulling to within 10-9 on Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield)' basket with 15:18 left in the first half, but Babson needed just five minutes to go on a 18-2 burst that put the game out of reach.  King contributed eight points during that span, then fed Erin Young on for a three to cap the run.  Another layup from King with 11 seconds left in the first half sent the Beavers into the lockerroom with their biggest lead of the game at 49-23.

Babson took their biggest lead of the game on a layup by Nikki Heavern with 6:26 left, as Smith never got lead below 22 points in the second half. 

In addition to King's near triple-double, Babson got 21 points and eight rebounds form Sarah Collins, and 15 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting from downtown by Erin Young.  Smith was led by 11 points by Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill)Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) also hit double-figures wth 10 points.  Babson outrebounded Smith 45-32, and the Beavers limited Smith to 30 percent shooting (21-for-70) including 3-for-20 from three point range.

Smith will be back in action on Wednesday, January 18, when they play at WPI at 7 p.m.  Babson will play at Clark at 7 p.m., also on January 18.
