Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Western New England

October 11, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (6-5) can extend their winning streak to a season high three games when they travel to Western New England University (4-9) on Thursday evening.

Last Meeting: Smith scored the final three goals of the game, coming back from a 4-2 deficit to win 5-4 in overtime on October 13, 2011.  Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) netted a hat-trick, scoring the game winner in the 80th minute.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers earned their first league victory of the year last Saturday with a 4-3 win over Wheaton College.  Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored twice, getting her first goals for nearly a month, as the Pioneers stayed in the thick of the NEWMAC playoff race.

Western New England Overview: The Golden Bears have lost two in a row and four of five.  Members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, WNE has yet to win a league game this season.

Smith Player to Watch: Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J./George School (Pa.))' return to action led to her scoring the go-ahead goal against the Lyons on Saturday.  The junior is one of many weapons in the Smith arsenal, which features seven players who have scored at least three goals this year.

Western New England Player to Watch: Chelsea Hayes has scored four goals and set up four more, including two game winners.

Did you know? Stein also scored the game winning goal in this fixture in 2010.  Stein's seventh goal of the season snapped a 2-2 tie with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation.
