Game Preview: Volleyball vs. Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (6-13, 2-4 NEWMAC) takes the court against regionally ranked Springfield (20-5, 5-1 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.  Smith will be looking to end a six game losing streak.

Last Meeting:  The Pride, then ranked No. 20 in the country, took a 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, 14-25) win over Smith on October 4, 2011.

Last Smith Win: Smith beat the Pride in four sets at the MIT Invitational on September 24, 2005.  Kate Sorensen had 14 kills and 26 digs for the Pioneers, who improved to 9-2.

Smith Overview: Smith dropped a pair of contests to Little East opposition over the weekend, including a tough 3-2  (19-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-20, 12-15) loss to Plymouth State University.  Tonight's contest is the next-to-last road game of the season for the Pioneers, who host the Volleyball Hall of Fame tournament this coming weekend.

Springfield Overview:  The Pride, who advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals in 2011, have won four of five and eight of 10.  Springfield competed at the Salisbury (Md.) Invitational this past weekend, posting wins over Richard Stockton (N.J.) SUNY-New Paltz, and Mary Washington (Va.). 

Smith Player to Watch: Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) has recorded double-digit kills in eight matches this year.

Springfield Player to Watch: Tessa Smolinski, the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week, totaled 77 kills, averaging 4.05 per set at a .317 clip while also recording 80 digs, averaging 4.21 per set in five matches last week.
