Game Preview: Soccer vs. Coast Guard

October 02, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (4-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) begins the second half of the season when they are visited by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (1-7, 0-3 NEWMAC) on Tuesday afternoon.

Last Meeting: Coast Guard eked out a 1-0 win over Smith on October 18, 2011.  Shannah Shelton scored the only goal with 19 minutes left in the game.  Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, Ga./Galloway) had Smith's best chance to equalise, but pushed her effort just wide with 10 minutes remaining.

Last Smith Win: Bryce Bludevich's goal five minutes before halftime was the difference as Smith grabbed a 1-0 win over the Bears on October 19, 2010.  Stand-in goalie Jenn Chang (Seoul, South Korea/Wilbraham & Monson) made seven saves to preserve the shutout victory.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers have lost three straight, with the most recent being a 1-0 overtime loss to Wellesley College on Saturday.  Smith kep the Blue off the board for all of regulation, but allowed the game winner halfway through the first overtime.

Coast Guard Overview:  The Bears have lost four in a row, including a 3-0 defeat to Clark University on Saturday in NEWMAC play.  Offense has been a struggle for Coast Guard, as the Bears have only scored six goals and been shutout five times.

Smith Player to Watch: Allie Rooney (Ludlow, Mass./Cathedral) and the Smith offense have been shutout in the last three games for Smith, but facing a defense that has allowed the fourth most goals in the league may cure those ills.

Coast Guard Player to Watch: Goalie Devin Fellman has been keeping Coast Guard in games, with a .694 save percentage.

Did you know?  Before Saturday, the last time a Smith contest had gone to overtime was September 18, 2010, when the Pioneers battled Mount Holyoke to a 1-1 tie.
