Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--First year
Lily Eriksen (Seattle, Wash./Bush School) scored her first career goal with 3:08 remaining in the second overtime to lift Smith College to a 2-1 double-overtime win over the United States Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith ends a three game losing streak and improves to 5-5 overall, and 2-2 in NEWMAC play. The Bears have now lost five in a row and are 1-8 overall, with an 0-4 NEWMAC record.
Smith outshot Coast Guard 30-15, but a slick surface and Coast Guard goalie Devin Fellman kept them off the board for all of the first half.
Jordan Houston (Logan, Utah/Logan) came closest to scoring in the opening stanza, but her curling effort was wrapped up by Fellman.
In the second half, the Bears nearly went in front, as Meredith Figgatt's header was blocked, and the followup attempt was cleared off the line by
Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown).
Houston did open the scoring with her second goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
Olivia Mallari (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) fizzed in a cross that Houston met with a first time volley past a diving Fellman for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears had the game tied up within 10 minutes. Sarah Hills' goalbound effort was blocked, only to see Caroline Eastman push in the rebound in the 71st minute.
Mallari could have won the game in regulation, but her looping shot bounced off the underside of the crossbar and back out.
While both teams had chances in the first overtime, Smith won the game just over the halfway point in the second.
Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) sprang the offside trap, and Eriksen rounded an onrushing Fellman to tap into an empty net for the winner.
"I saw Aidan's pass, and I tried to stay on the shoulder of the defender," said Eriksen. "I had missed a shot like that before, but I kept my composure."
Fellman finished with 12 saves, while Smith counterpart
Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) had eight stops.
Smith will entertain No. 14/15 Wheaton College on Saturday, October 6, at 1 p.m. Coast Guard will play at Mass. Maritime on October 3, with a kick-off slated for 4 p.m.
