Volleyball Drops A Pair At Hall of Fame Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team lost a pair of matches on the second day of the Volleyball Hall of Fame tournament, co-hosted by Smith and Mount Holyoke, on Saturday.  The Pioneers fell to Westfield State and Brandeis, with both matches going to five sets.

The Pioneers are now 6-17, heading into the final week of matches.  Smith still has a shot at the final NEWMAC tournament berth, needing wins in its final two games of league play, at Mount Holyoke and at home to Wellesley. 

In the opener against Westfield State, the Pioneers fell behind in the first two sets, with both going to extra points, before rallying to win the third and fourth sets.  The deciding set went to extra points, where Westfield won 17-15 to take the match.  Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) led the Pioneers with 17 kills, hitting .385, with 29 assists, six service aces, and 21 digs.  Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 15 kills and 11 digs, and Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 22 assists, 10 digs, and three service aces.

Against Brandeis, the Pioneers went back-and-forth with the Judges, falling the first and third sets while winning the second and fourth.  In the fifth set, Brandeis pulled away for a 15-11 win.  Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) again led Smith, piling up 15 kills, 11 assists, and 21 digs, while Drummond added 10 kills and Ashworth totalled 28 assists, with nine digs and a pair of service aces.

Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) was named to the All-Tournament Team for Smith.

Smith will take the court for the final road game of the season, facing Mount Holyoke College at 7 p.m. on October 24.
