Game Preview: Volleyball vs. Wellesley

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The final game of the regular season is upon us, and with it, a chance for the Smith College volleyball team (7-18, 3-5 NEWMAC) to qualify for the NEWMAC tournament with a win over Wellesley College (26-4, 8-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday.  Smith will also need Clark to beat Babson on Saturday.


Last Meeting: The Blue took a 3-0 win (16-25, 15-25, 21-25) at the Seven Sisters Championship earlier this year on October 7, 2012.

Last Smith Win: Smith won 3-0 (30-16, 33-31, 31-29) at the Seven Sisters Championship on October 7, 2007, at Vassar College.

Smith Overview:  The Pioneers suffered a 3-0 (19-25, 14-25, 18-25) loss to Amherst College on Wednesday night.  The Pioneers are tied with Babson College for the final NEWMAC playoff berth.  Should the teams finish with the same record, Babson would receive the bid to the tournament thanks to their 3-1 win back on September 11.

Wellesley Overview: The Blue, ranked as high as No. 25 in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, have won four of their last five and have claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament. 

Senior Profiles:

A four year player, Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) has a career season high 185 kills, for 551 in her career.  She also has 88 career aces and 695 career digs.






Also a four year player, Becca Gordon (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) has 175 kills, 41 solo blocks and 87 block assists.  She also has 19 career service aces.





A first year senior, Becca Alexander (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) joined the team this year and has played in 89 of 94 possible sets and has 25 solo blocks and 34 block assists.






Wellelesley Player to Watch: Sydney Carfagno leads the team with 296 kills.

Did you know?  Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) is the only player to appear in all 94 sets for the Pioneers this season.
