Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Shelby Benoit scored with 1:39 left in the first overtime to lead No. 14 Wheaton College to a 1-0 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons maintain their undefeated record and are now 11-0-2, and 5-0 in NEWMAC play, while Smith falls to 5-6, and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.
A cagey first half saw limited opportunities for both teams, but the game started to open up in the second half. Smith nearly went in front early in the second half, as Wheaton goalie Ali Hinton fumbled
Aidan Hitt (Arlington, Va./Yorktown)'s corner kick, but
Chelby Wakefield (East Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson)'s followup attempt was cleared off the line.
Gabriella Verde rattled the post in the 56th minute for the Lyons, and Smith 'keeper
Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) wrapped efforts from Julia Cipriano and Cassey Muse. Hitt's free kick from 30 yards out was pushed onto the cross bar by Hinton in the 70th minute. Wheaton started to press towards the end of the period, but Norris stopped Verde's header, and Muse and Cipriano shot wide.
90 minutes was not enough to separate the teams, and Smith headed to overtime for the third consecutive game. Wheaton turned up the pressure in the extra period, but Norris was equal to the task, including an outstanding save from Cipriano that bounced off Norris' head and out of play.
Benoit ended the contest in the 99th minute, taking two dribbles and sliding the winner past Norris. It was her second goal of the season.
Norris finished with a career high 12 saves, while Hinton made three stops for Wheaton. Wheaton will play host to Salem State University on October 10 at 4 p.m. Smith will next take the field against Babson College, traveling for a 1 p.m. contest.
