NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (6-10, 2-3 NEWMAC) returns to NEWMAC play when the Pioneers host the United States Coast Guard Academy (13-8, 2-3 NEWMAC) on Tuesday evening.
Last Meeting: The Bears took a 3-0 (14-25, 16-25, 18-25) win over Smith on September 27, 2011.
Last Smith Win: October 14, 2008 - in a topsy-turvy game, the Bears took the first set 25-20, before Smith tied the match with a 25-13 win in set two. Coast Guard took a 2-1 lead with a 27-25 win in the third set, but Smith won the fourth set 25-23 and the fifth 15-12 to take a 3-2 win.
Smith Overview: Smith is coming off a 1-3 showing at the Seven Sisters Championship last weekend. The Pioneers swept Mount Holyoke 3-0 in their opening match before falling to eventual tournament champion Vassar, nationally ranked Wellesley, and hosts Bryn Mawr.
Coast Guard Overview: The Bears have won five of seven, including the last three in a row over Clark, Roger Williams, and Salve Regina. Coast Guard is 13-4 since losing their opening four matches, three of which were to nationally ranked teams.
Smith Player to Watch: Kristi Hammond (Yona, Guam/St. Johns School) is rounding into form, with six kills against WPI and an All-Tournament team showing at the Seven Sisters Championship.
Coast Guard Player to Watch: Samantha Marmolejo has 350 digs, in the top five among NEWMAC players.
Did you know? The Coast Guard Academy joined the NEWMAC in 1998. The league changed its name from the NEW8 to the NEWMAC, and began sponsoring championships for men.
