Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Stout defense limited Middlebury College to 30% shooting from the floor as the Smith College basketball team rolled into the Thanksgiving break with an 80-47 victory over the Panthers. It marks the first time Smith had defeated Middlebury.
It was the Panthers (1-2) who took an early 4-0 lead on baskets by Rachel Crews and Sarah Marcus, but Smith (2-0) responded with nine straight points.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) knocked down a short jumper and a three point basket, and
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) fed
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) for a layup off an offensive rebound.
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster)'s jumper pushed the lead to 17-6 at the 12:41 mark of the first half, and Smith continued to pour it on, going up 29-10 on
Lauren Weston (Florence, Mass./Northampton)'s short hoop with 7:55 to play.
Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.)' layup with 2:27 to play gave Smith their biggest advantage at 41-17, and the Pioneers took a 43-20 lead into halftime courtesy of
Brittany Purington (Weare, N.H./John Stark)'s basket just under the minute mark.
The second half saw more of the same, as Smith opened the period on a 10-2 run, capped by two free throws from Drummond. Smith led by as many as 37 points when Solis sank a layup with 3:06 left in the game.
Every player who got in the game scored for Smith, who were led by 15 points apiece from Drummond and Solis, while Quattrochi chipped in 13 points. Zakoske led the team with nine rebounds. The Pioneers shot 50% from three point range, while Middlebury struggled from deep, connecting on just two of 11 long range attempts. Katie Ritter led the Panthers with nine points.
Smith will break for the holiday, before hitting the road to play at RPI on Sunday, November 25, at 2 p.m. Middlebury will also play on November 25, traveling to SUNY-PLattsburgh for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
