February 11, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Winners of seven straight games, the Smith College basketball team (17-4, 12-3 NEWMAC) can cause a major shakeup in the league standings with an upset win over No. 18 Babson College (19-2, 15-0 NEWMAC).

Last Meeting: Babson used an 18-2 run over five first half minutes to break open a 10-9 game as the Beavers, then ranked No. 21 in the d3hoops.com poll, rolled to an 83-57 win over Smith on January 14.  Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) led Smith with 11 points.

Last Smith Win: Smith upset the Beavers 65-58 on January 24, 2009.  Anna Veltri scored 26 points, connecting on 7-of-14 shots, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc as Smith improved to 8-8.

Smith Overview:  Since that loss to Babson, the Pioneers have not tasted defeat.  Most recently, the Pioneers edged out Clark University 68-62, in a win that puts Smith in pole position for the No. 2 seed in the NEWMAC tournament and a first round bye.  Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led Smith with 19 points, while Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) added 15, Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) 13, and Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) had 11.

Babson Overview: The only team with a longer winning streak than Smith, Babson has won 11 in a row, and has not lost since the start of 2012.  A true juggernaut, Babson has won the 11 games by an average margin of 34.8 points and averaged 77.3 points per game as a team over that time.

Smith Player to Watch:  Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) proved an excellent foil for Drummond on Wednesday night, connecting on 6 of 14 field goals and passing out five assists against Clark.

Babson Player to Watch: Nicki Wurdeman leads the NEWMAC in scoring at an 18.2 per game clip, while pulling down 9.3 rebounds.

Did you know? This matchup features a matchup of two winners of the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, NEWBA Rookie of the Year, and ECAC New England Rookie of the Year - Wurdeman, who captured the awards in 2008-09, and Drummond who received them a year ago.
