Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.--Babson College received 63 points from its starting five on their way to a 74-51 win over Smith College in the championship game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Smith falls to 20-6 and will await word of a bid to the ECAC New England Tournament on Monday. Babson improves to 25-2 and won their fourth consecutive conference tournament title. The Beavers received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will find out their opponents on Monday on the NCAA's selection show.
Both teams started out hot from the floor, as Smith connected on their first three shots, while Babson hit on their first four for an 8-6 lead. The Beavers pushed the advantaged to eight on Allanah Wynn's layup at the 15:01 mark, and when Wynn fed Sarah Collins for a bucket at 13:35, the lead extended to 18-10.
Smith pulled to within five when
Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) canned a three on the next Smith possesion, only to see the Beavers take a double digit lead on a basket by Kathleen King and Erin Young's three made it a 23-13.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth)'s layup pulled Smith within six with 10:10 to play, but the Beavers ended the half on a 15-2 run that saw Smith miss 14 of their final 15 shots of the half.
Babson took their greatest lead at 51-21 four minutes into the half on a basket by King. Smith clawed back to within 63-45 on Giles' layup with 4:58 to play, but would get no closer.
Drummond and
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) each had 14 points for Smith. King led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Collins who had 19, Nicki Wurdeman 14, and Wynn tossed in 10.
