Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--
Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) scored seven goals for the second consecutive game, but a valiant comeback effort fell short as the Pioneers fell to Western New England University 18-14 on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (1-1) found themselves down 10-3 at halftime, then got to within 13-9 before the Golden Bears (2-2) pulled away.
Western New England opened the scoring on a pair of goals by Liz McRoberts and Katie Toomy within the first minute before Fileti's first tally of the day got Smith on the board. The Golden Bears then reeled off six straight goals, with Toomy and Julianne Green each getting a brace for an 8-1 lead with 6:38 left in the first half.
Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) set up Fileti for her second of the day, and the senior added another before the Golden Bears scored 61 seconds apart to go into halftime up 10-3.
Smith came out a different team in the second half, as Bracken and Fileti combined to scored the first three goals of the frame cut the margin to 10-6. Western New England responded with two more goals, only to see Smith continue to claw back, with goals from
Mckenzie Hessel (Portland, Ore./Wilson), Bracken, and Fileti reducing the defiicit to 13-9.
Western New England put the comeback to a halt with five of the next seven goals to take an 18-11 lead with 3:59 to play. A pair of
MK Pasini (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) markers and a goal from
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) set the final score for Smith, who got 11 saves in net from
Alina Pechacek (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy).
Toomy finished with seven goals for WNEU.
Smith will continue their road trip with a visit to SUNY-New Paltz on Wednesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. Western New England will also be on the road, traveling to Castleton State College for a March 13 tilt.
