HILTON HEAD, S.C.--Smith sent four matches to a third set, but fell in against Allegheny College (Pa.) 8-1 and the University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire 7-2 in the second to last day of matches of the Pioneers' spring break trip.
Facing off against Allegheny first, Smith earned their only point at No. 2 singles where
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) defeated Debbie Landau 6-1, 6-7 (4), 11-9.
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) also played a three set match at No. 3, falling to Janna Dickerson 4-6, 6-1, 7-10, and
Grace McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass./La Salle Academy) also went to three sets at No. 6, falling 1-6, 7-5, 6-10.
Gianna Teague (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy) was defeated at No. 1 by Carolyn Shetter 6-0, 6-0, and Laura Steele toppled
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4. Elyse Schmitt knocked off
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5.
In doubles play, the Gators swept all three matches. Shetter and Landau beat Oblamski and Teague 8-4 at No. 1, while Dickerson and Schmitt beat Dubin and Inskeep 8-3 at No. 2. Steele teamed up by Kathleen McBride to beat
Allie Ryan (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central ) and
Julia Signell (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth Academy) 8-6.
Both Weick and Oblamski earned points at singles in a 7-2 loss to the Blugolds of UWEC. Weick defeated Maddie Johnson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, while Oblamski netted a comeback win over Renee Nelson 6-7, 6-2, 10-4.
Teague fell to Taylor Heltne 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while Dubin was topped by Gretchen Bachmeier 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Inskeep was edged by Katie Gillman 6-4, 7-6 at No. 3, and Lexi DeMario won over McKay-Corkum 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6.
In doubles, Heltne and Gillman beat Teague and Oblamski 8-1 at No. 1, while Bachmeier and Johnson beach Dubin and Robin Cyr 8-3 at No. 2. Mary Frassetto and DeMario beat Ryan and Signell 8-0 at No. 3 to complete the sweep of doubles.
Smith will conclude the Spring Break trip with an 8 a.m. match against Nebraska Wesleyan on March 23.
