Game Preview: Lacrosse vs. MIT

March 24, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--NEWMAC play begins today for the Smith College lacrosse team, who host Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a 1 p.m. game.  Smith will be attempting to snap a 20 game conference losing streak, dating back to the 2008 season.

Last Meeting: A defensive battle saw MIT come out on top 9-3, on March 26, 2011.  Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) opened the scoring for Smith less than three minutes into the game, but four straight goals for the Engineers put MIT in front to stay.

Last Smith Win: Smith won their second consecutive game with a 13-6 win over MIT on April 21, 2001.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers concluded a four game swing away from home with a tough 21-12 loss to Alvernia University on March 20.  Smith went 1-3 on the trip, and now returns for three straight home games.  The recharged offense continues to roll, as Smith has now scored at least 12 goals in every game so far this season.

MIT Overview: The Engineers snapped a season opening four game losing streak with a 20-12 win over Framingham State on March 20.  MIT has allowed double-digit goals in every game this season.  This is conference opener for MIT also.

Smith Player to Watch: Kate Detrick (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy) scored her first collegiate goal against Albright on March 19, and has 11 ground balls, third best on the squad.

MIT Player to Watch:  Katie Kauffman has scored 10 goals this season, and needs just one more to become the program's eighth player to reach 100 goals in a career.

Did you know?  Smith's last conference win was an 11-8 win over Mount Holyoke on April 15, 2008.
