Bracken Nets 50th Goal In Loss to Springfield

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) scored three goals, including her 50th marker of the season, as the Smith College lacrosse team concluded NEWMAC play with a 21-8 loss to Springfield College on Tuesday evening.  The Pioneers are now 7-7 overall, and 2-4 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield is 8-7, and 4-1 in NEWMAC play.

The loss locks Smith into the No. 5 position in the NEWMAC tournament.  Smith will travel to Wheaton or Wellesley on Wednesday, April 25 in the quarterfinal round. 

Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) grabbed the first goal of the game for Smith, whipping in a shot with just 20 seconds played.  Allie Davis and Meghan Flanagan put the Pride up 2-1, but Bracken's first goal of the day tied the score at two with 25:01 on the clock.

Another goal from Flanagan gave Springfield the lead for good, and the Pride upped the lead to 4-2 via the stick of Kerstin Lindoorth.  Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth)' free position goal got Smith back within one at 4-3, but the Pride pulled away, finished the half on a 9-2 burst fueled by three goals from Jackie Moscardelli to go into halftime up 13-5.

Kelly Gallo scored the first goal of the second half for Springfield, who netted five of the first six goals and never allowed Smith with in 11.

Moscardelli finished with six goals for Springfield, who had 11 different players score a goal.  In addition to Bracken's three tallies, Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) also scored three times and Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) netted twice. 

Smith will conclude their season with a pair of non-conference games before the NEWMAC tournament begins.  The Pioneers will travel to UMass-Dartmouth to take on the Corsairs on April 19 at 7 p.m.  Springfield will entertain NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke on April 21 at noon.
