Smith Laxers Fall In ECAC Title Game

Box Score NORTON, Mass.--The best Smith College lacrosse season for 13 years came to a close with a 20-5 defeat to Wheaton College in the championship game of the ECAC tournament on Sunday afternoon.  Smith concludes its season with a 10-9 record, tying the second highest win total in school history.

Senior Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) paced the Pioneers with two goals and an assist, while Jessica Lilliquist scored two goals. Sophomore Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) won a game-high eight draw controls and also caused two turnovers.  Fileti finishes her career with 135 goals and 39 assists for a total of 174 points - both the goals and points rank third all-time in Smith lacrosse history. 

Wheaton outshot the Pioneers 34-19 on the afternoon and led 10-2 at halftime behind four goals from Moreira and two from Colburn. The Lyons scored the first seven goals of the second half – including DeSantis' 50th of the season – to build a commanding 17-2 lead. Smith received five yellow cards on the afternoon which led to a pair of up goals for the Lyons – one by Moreira in the first half and another by Colburn midway through the second stanza.

Senior Hailey Colburn scored four goals and dished out three assists for the Lyons (14-6), who captured their first ECAC Championship in program history after a pair of trips to the semifinals in 2001 and 2002. Amy Moreira was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after compiling 10 points (8-2-10) and nine draw controls this weekend.
