Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Springfield

September 22, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (3-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) will look to break in the win column in league play when Springfield College (3-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) plays a visit on Saturday afternoon.

Last Meeting: Springfield came out on top by a 6-3 score on October 4, 2011.  Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) opened the scoring for Smith seven minutes into the game, but Springfield scored the next three goals to take the lead for good.  Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) got Smith within a goal at 3-2 five minutes after halftime, only to see the Pride score three more times to seal the win.

Last Smith Win: October 29, 2002 - Smith sent Springfield to their seventh consecutive loss - 1-0.

Smith Overview: Smith got back to .500 with a 2-1 overtime win over Westfield State on Tuesday.  Playing in driving wind and rain, Smith equalized just before halftime through Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset)' fourth goal of the year, and Stein put the winner in with 10 seconds left in the first overtime period.

Springfield Overview: The Pride have lost three of four, with the only win in that group being a 5-3 win over Clark University in their league opener.  Springfield fell to nationally ranked Amherst College in their most recent game, as the Lord Jeffs opened up a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes to put the game away.

Smith Player to Watch: Sophie Demuynck (Mt. Holly, N.J./Moorestown Friends) leads a defense that limited Westfield State to nine shots on cage.

Springfield Player to Watch:  Springfield's offense is led by Kelly Gallo, who has a team high four goals and 10 points.  10 different players have scored a goal for the Pride this season.
