Game Preview: Field Hockey vs. Wellesley

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (4-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) could post their highest win total since 2008 with a win over Wellesley College (6-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Last Meeting:  Wellesley scored three times after halftime to break open a tie game for a 5-2 win on October 15, 2011.

Last Smith Win:  The Pioneers took a 2-0 halftime lead, then held off the Blue for a 5-3 win on October 7, 2006.

Smith Overview: Smith showed their mettle with a 4-3 win over Simmons College on Wednesday night.  After Simmons rallied to tie the game at three, the Pioneers grabbed the win through Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer)'s game winner with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Wellesley Overview: The Blue have suffered only two losses this season - a 2-0 defeat to No. 5 ranked Bowdoin and a 2-1 loss in to Connecticut College in a penalty shootout.  Wellesley outshot the Camels 20-4, but lost 5-4 in a shootout after two scoreless overtime periods.

Smith Player to Watch: Sophie Demuynck (Mt. Holly, N.J./Moorestown Friends) leads a defense that is critical to the team's success.  In Smith's four wins, the Pioneers have allowed just 1.5 goals per game.  She's also contributed three goals and one assist.

Wellesley Player to Watch: Defender Kaitlyn Kirkaldy leads a defense that has allowed just 11 goals in eight games.

Did you know? Smith has scored 39 goals through eight games this year, compared to 41 goals in all of 2011 .
