Field Hockey Tripped Up At Wellesley

Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.  Smith falls to 4-5 overall, with an 0-3 NEWMAC ledger.  Wellesley is now 7-2, and 2-0 against NEWMAC opposition.

The Blue got the scoring started 5:21 into the game, when Emily Lewis scored off a penalty corner. Wellesley added two more Lallie Lukens and Lewis scored 1:23 apart for a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.

Three minutes into the second half, Lewis set up Allison Robbins for the fourth goal of the game.  Hannah Flesch and Meghan Peterson also scored in the second half for Wellesley.

Smith broke up the shutout with 4:14 to play, as Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) netted an unassisted tally for her third goal of the year and second in as many games.

Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) made her second start of the year, making four saves in 50:54 of work.  Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) played the final 19:06, making three saves.

Smith will return home to face Daniel Webster College on October 3 at 4 p.m.  The Eagles are coached by former Smith standout Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select).  Wellesley will host MIT on October 2 at 4 p.m.
