Game Preview: Soccer vs. Wellesley

September 29, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College soccer team (4-4, 1-1 NEWMAC) will look to snap a two game losing skid when they travel to Wellesley College (4-4-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Last Meeting: Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) grabbed the only goal of the game five minutes before halftime as Smith's nine game losing streak came to an end on October 15, 2011. The Blue barraged Smith in the second half, but Lindsay Gregor kept them out, making six saves.

Smith Overview: As mentioned, Smith has lost two straight with defeats to Springfield College and Westfield State University.  A win today would put Smith right in the middle of the NEWMAC playoff chase.

Wellesley Overview: The Blue have lost their last two games, with both defeats coming to nationally ranked teams.  A 3-0 loss to then No. 19 Wheaton ended a four game winning streak, followed by a 1-0 loss to No. 24 Brandeis.

Smith Player to Watch: Chelby Wakefield (East Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) has played every minute this season, starting in a defense that has allowed a mere eight goals this year.

Wellesley Player to Watch: Sophomore goalie Claire Cerda has started seven games in goal for Wellesley, with a goals against average of 1.80.

Did you know?  Win or loss, every game for Smith this year has ended in a shutout.
