Wellesley Needs Overtime To Get Past Smith

September 29, 2012

Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.--Chelsea-Ann Patry scored the only goal of the game 4:33 into the extra period as the Smith College soccer team was downed by Wellesley College, 1-0 in overtime, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

Smith lost its third straight game, falling to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play.  Wellesley is now 5-4-1, and 2-1 against NEWMAC foes.

Wellesley outshot Smith 16-4, but could not beat Smith goalie Cody Norris (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) in regulation.  Norris finished with 10 saves, while counterpart Claire Cerda made four stops.

Smith tested Cerda late in regulation, but shots from Olivia Mallari (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and GiGi Ross (Colt's Neck, N.J./Colt's Neck) were saved.

Patry ended the game nearly halfway through the first overtime, taking a shot from the left side that arched into the upper right corner over Norris' outstretched arm.

Smith will play their next two games at home, beginning with a visit from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday, October 2, at 4 p.m.  Wellesley will play at MIT on October 2, also at 4 p.m.
