Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) piled up 12 kills, 16 assists, nine digs, and two service aces as the Smith College volleyball team beat Elms College 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 29-27) for their first win of the season on Saturday. Smith improves to 1-1 overall, while Elms falls to 0-4.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had seven kills and 10 digs, while
Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) added eight kills and four service aces. Smith had 10 service aces in total, while hitting .367 as a team and holding Elms to a .077 hit percentage.
Smith got even distribution from its two setters as Smith handed out 16 assists, while
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) (North Falmouth, Mass.) added 17 helpers in the winning effort.
Elms' freshman Shannon Bolton (Shelton, Conn.) and senior setter Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) combined for 17 of the team's 20 assists, and freshman middle hitter Christine Searles (Tolland, Mass.) added five kills behind Martin's six to lead the Blazers in the losing effort.
Elms returns to Picknelly Arena for the last of its five-match home-stand on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when it hosts Westfield State University. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena. Smith continues to play away from Ainsworth Gym with the beginning of NEWMAC play on September 11 at Babson College.
