Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team split their final two matches and finished in second place at the Seven Sisters Championship at Mount Holyoke College on Sunday. The Pioneers beat Bryn Mawr 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-11) and lost to Wellesley 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 18-25) for their highest finish since finishing second in 2006.
Smith improves to 13-6, the most wins since a 17-15 season in 2007.
In the opener against Bryn Mawr, Smith got 11 kills from Drummond and eight from Sarlandt to win their third straight match in the tournament. Sarlandt added a whopping six service aces, and
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) had 25 digs.
Sonia Brown (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) also had 18 digs.
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) and
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) combined for 29 assists as the Pioneers hit .407 as a team.
Against Wellesley, Drummond had 17 more kills to move into second place on Smith's career kills list. Drummond now has 1,049, behind only Kate Sorensen '06, who holds the record with 1,606. Sarlandt had 15 more kills and hit .500 for the match, with two more service aces. Ashworth had 19 assists and
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) 16, and Voorhes had 35 digs and Brown 45.
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) and
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) were both named to the All-Tournament team.
Smith will resume NEWMAC play with a match against WPI on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
